STUDENT PARLIAMENT

What is the Student Parliament?

The Student Parliament is the highest decision-making body in the Students' Union. They represent you and your views in a host of different ways on issues ranging from social experience to academic quality, to liberation and much, much more.

Students are recruited from engaged groups across the Students' Union to sit on the Student Parliament Committee;

Students’ Union President

Student Trustees

School Reps

Society Officers

Course Reps

Sports Club Officers

What does Student Parliament do exactly?

Student Parliament meets at least three times an academic year to;

  • Scrutinise Student Ideas in order to create policy for the Students' Union.
  • Discuss matters affecting the student experience.
  • Hold the elected SU President to account and question them about their activities, campaigns, policies and decisions.

Who can vote on Student Ideas?

Only Student Parliament Committee members  can vote at its meetings but any student can attend and any student can influence the SU through the Ideas Forum.

Sounds good, but why do we need it?

We need students to effectively represent the views of current University of Bolton students, ensuring representation runs through the core of our activity and campaigns.

We put our members (students) at the heart of what we do, the purpose of the Students’ Union is to exist for the advancement of the student experience in all forms on all campuses.

How do I submit an Idea to Student Parliament?

Anyone can submit an idea for change at any time of the year.  If you have an idea or suggestion to improve the student experience, please let us know by completing the Student Idea Form here

A Student Idea must;

1.  Be owned by a named student and have a clear impact that beneifits members of the SU; and

2.  have at least 25 other student votes within 10 weeks of posting in order for it to go to the SU President for approval.

The Ideas Form is a direct and effective way to get your voice heard, and you can use it as many times as you like during your studies.  We know that your needs and wants change year on year, so use the Student Idea Form to reflect the current issues you are facing and let us know what it is you care about.

How Does A Student Idea Become Policy?

Once your idea has been submitted, it will be reviewed by the Students’ Union President to make sure it’s feasible.

If your Idea is accepted, you will need a minimum of 25 other students to vote for your Student Idea so it can to go to the Student Parliament to be discussed, voted on and potentially actioned.

You can attend Student Parliament to speak about your idea if you want to.

Student Parliament has the power to veto a Student Idea if they think it is not in the best interests of the student body or will have a negative financial, legal or reputational consequence for the Students’ Union.  This is known as ‘veto.’
