Annual General Meeting

BOLTON SU ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM)

What is an AGM?

AGM stands for Annual General Meeting and is a key meeting held annually.

Every student at the University of Greater Manchester is automatically a member of the Students' Union (with an option to opt out).  All SU members (students) are invited to attend, meaning you can have a say in how your Union is run.

Why should I attend the AGM?

The AGM is the sovereign democratic body of the Students’ Union.  It sees students come together to debate and vote on motions, receive the financial accounts from last year, approve NUS affiliation, ask questions of the President, and find out what the President and Students’ Union have been up to over the past year.

It’s important you attend.  If you want more information, please call into the SU and speak to the President or a member of staff.

What happens at the AGM?

Quorum

Quorum is the minimum number of members (students) needed for the meeting to proceed and for resolutions and motions to be validly passed.   The quorum for Bolton SU is 30 members.  If the meeting does not have the minimum number of members attending, it will be postponed and recalled at another time.   If the recalled meeting does not achieve 30 members in attendance, then the members who are present shall be the quorum.

Agenda

The meeting follows an agenda, items on the agenda include:

Approving minutes of the previous AGM Meeting

Minutes of the previous AGM will be presented to the members for approval.

Noting the previous year’s SU activities

The General Manager presents a report highlighting the Union’s activities and achievements over the previous year.

President’s Report

The President presents their report outlining their campaigns, projects and achievements over their term of office.

Annual accounts

The SU’s annual accounts will be presented for members to note.

Affiliations

The Union’s affiliations will be presented to the AGM for members to note.

Voting

All members of the Union are entitled to vote at the AGM, however, they must be present at the meeting to do so.

Who can put forward a proposal to the AGM?

All members are entitled to attend the AGM and put proposals forward.

Can I ask questions?

Yes.  All members attending the AGM can ask questions relating to presented reports or to proposals that have been put forward. There will be opportunities to ask questions in the meeting, or they can be emailed ahead of time info@boltonsu.com

Tabled motions

What is a motion?

A motion, very basically, is an idea. It is a line of text asking the Union to do something which will make a difference to student life at UGM.

  • If you want to propose a new campaign or change something you feel strongly about, submit a Motion to the AGM.

  • Motions will be called one by one.  The proposer will speak to members, explaining why students should support their Motion.  After this, members will be invited to debate the Motion.

  • After the debate has ended, the Motion will be put to a vote; members can vote For, Against or Abstain.

  • If the Motion passes, it will be endorsed by the AGM and become Bolton SU policy.

Any other Business

This is an opportunity for members to raise something that was not on the agenda or something for inclusion in a future agenda.

After the AGM

Members will be invited to stay for light refreshments and network with other members.
